Frank X. Tolbert’s life-long passion for chili inspired him to write his world-famous book “A Bowl of Red” 50 years ago. He founded the Terlingua Championship Chili Cook-Off in 1967 and joined forces with son Frank 2 in 1976 to open the first Tolbert’s Restaurant in Dallas.
Tolbert’s had changed a lot since the early days in 1976 Dallas. New, upscale menu items and a move to Grapevine, Texas. Created the need for a brand that conveyed quality without denying it’s deep Texas roots.
This logo needed to be simple enough to work on everything from t-shirts to outdoor signage. Inspiration came from typography and etchings popular in the mid 1800’s, while the chili bowl swash and lone star speak to the heritage of the restaurant.
If you’re ever in Grapevine, TX, stop by and have a bowl of red. It’s darn good! Tolbert’s : 423 S Main St, Grapevine, TX 76051 817-421-4888
